LA Selects Girls 19U claim GOLD in Detroit

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!
The LA Selects Girls 19U became the first ever champion of the Manon Rheaume Invitational in Detroit on Nov 12 - 15, 2009. The team started the tournament defeating Madison Capitols (WI) by a score of 9-2 and Detroit Little Caesars 3-0. On Day 2, the Selects clinched first place in the division despite losing their final round robin game against Chicago Mission 3-2.
In the playoff round the Selects raised their game another notch led by the goaltending of Laura Chamberlain. Chamberlain shutout Detroit Honeybaked 2-0 in the quarterfinals and Aurora Panthers (PWHL) 1-0. Lauren Strauss (3 goals, 4 assists) netted the game winner in the semis.
In the finals, the Selects would have a chance to avenge their only blemish of the tournament, facing the Chicago Mission. A tight checking game would lead to a shootout to decide the champion. Kourtney Kunichika and Emma Tani scored in the 4-player sudden-death shootout while Chamberlain shut the door to claim the championship by a final of 2-1. Kunichika (4G, 6A), Tani (4G,2A), and Strauss led the team in points. Allie Era led the defense corps in points (3G, 2A) and ice time. Chamberlain was named tournament MVP. Chamberlain posted 3 shutouts in the tournament with 0.62 Goals Against Average . Her 3 shutouts were the same number as all the goalies combined in the entire 19U division. The LA Selects 19U Girls are back home for 4 days then head to Rochester, NY for the second leg of the US - Canada Cup Series. |
