The REAL power of the LA Hockey Club
One year ago I decided to pay the LAHC skating arena a visit. That visit, as so very few occasions in a man’s life, would change my life forever!. It sounds cliché, but it is true: It was a warm, sunny afternoon in Southern California and it was try-out day for my son, Vincent, at the LAHC skating arena. As I am ‘new’ to the sport I had no expectations or what so ever as I walked up to the building what was supposed to be a skating rink. At least it had a sign on the roof that indicated that it was actually a skating rink.
I was walking in front of my son and ready to open the door to the facility. That moment, as I opened the door, was just like opening a door to a new world that I had never experienced before. I stood still for a moment, it seemed like everything was moving in slow motion. There was a thick cloud of pure, mesmerizing energy. As I looked onto the ice, the only things I could ‘see’ were discipline, structure, willpower, composure, desire and control.
Even though I had been exposed to quite a few skating rinks in the south land, none of them were like my first experience with the LAHC, a serious and hard-core hockey club with three things on the agenda: HOCKEY, HOCKEY and HOCKEY!
To make a long story short: the team that my son ended up playing for, took the SCAHA MITE A 2005-2006 title under the supervising eye of no other than legendary Jeff Turcotte. He and the supporting cast of Canadian, Russian and other highly talented coaches taught the kids how to play hockey with skill and team spirited intensity.
For me it was a season of learning. Not only as far as the game and its rules, but more so to study the body mechanics of the young hockey players, the speed, the acceleration, the power and endurance involved in hockey.
Now THIS is MY field! My name is Jørgen de Mey and I’m proud to introduce myself as LAHC trainer & nutritionist consultant. My personal expertise is strength, power and speed training through a balanced workout regimen of weightlifting, circuit,- and core training and cardio vascular conditioning. In conjunction with the “hockey off-ice training” I tailor a perfectly sound nutritional program to the needs of the serious hockey player to optimize the outcome of the hockey training “off” AND “on” the ice, which is really… OPTIMIZING ONES FULL HOCKEY POTENTIAL!!
Furthermore, I will help parents to understand the importance of proper nutrition, not only before an important game or during a top-notch tournament, but also for a lifetime of speed, power, strength and health. This way they can instill proper habits not only in their own life, but also and more importantly, in the lives of their future hockey prospects!
With the help of James Gasseau and the staff of the LAHC I will be able to write a monthly column. The column will be appropriately called: “Up Your Power & Speed”. It’ll appear monthly and I will share tips about training, conditioning and proper eating habits. On occasion I will make myself available to be physically present to demonstrate proper work out techniques and how to construct a “superset-like” or “circuit-like” workout! Just for starters I give you one rule you can hold on to for the rest of your life:
“There’s NEVER best, there’s always BETTER!”

"when i'm working with a new actor for a project, my first phone call is to get them set up with Jorgen De Mey."
